Through his lens, we experience the dynamic energy of Bruce Jenner, fresh from winning the 1976 men’s decathlon, the ingénue charm of an 11-year-old Brooke Shields, the fearless exposure of Andy Warhol’s Factory stars, and the not-so-subtle sensuality of countless Cosmo cover girls (a magazine that Scavullo shaped for nearly thirty years.) Originally an assistant of the famed fashion photographer Horst P. The Photographies sale in Paris promises a remarkable array of unique and rare works. Alongside works from masters of the genre including Man Ray, Erwin Blumenfeld and Helmut Newton are the highly anticipated lots Diane Arbus’ Identical twins, Richard Avedon’s portraits from the series In the American West, Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Barragan House from his acclaimed Architecture series, and a unique work by Bernd and Hilla Becher composed of 9 vintage photographs from the Water Towers series. These undisputed masterpieces all bring a very specific and individual offering to the history of Photography;  from sociological studies to portraiture through to conceptual observations, one will discover works that will satisfy the tastes of both the seasoned collector and the budding connoisseur.’ – Sotheby’s

‘Among the 100 lots presented in this sale is an exceptional and fresh-on-the-market group of 42 daguerreotypes by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey. Practically unknown until the middle of the 20th century, Girault de Prangey started his Grand Tour in 1841 – just a couple of years after Daguerre’s technical discovery – from which he brought back previously unseen views of Europe and Asia minor.
Another highlight of the auction will be the sale of a group of prints by André Kertész and Martin Munkácsi which were hidden away for the duration of the Second World War. Lastly, a rare print by Mapplethorpe will also be offered, Man in Polyester Suit (€180,000–250,000), an iconic photo that caused a great deal of controversy when it was exhibited in 1980.’ – Christies

Sold over two days, this important collection from the Shpilman Institute for Photography (SIP) is composed of 210 modernist, surrealist and contemporary photographs. Focused on abstraction and the question of perception, it gathers the works of the greatest artists of their generation, such as Man Ray, Dora Maar, Moholy Nagy, Thomas Struth, Gerhard Richter and Walead Beshty.
For over a decade the SIP has held important exhibitions of modernist photographs exhibitions and is dedicated to the promotion of the medium in Israel as well as abroad, to benefit all communities. The proceeds of these two sales will be devoted to education and research programmes developed by the Institute’ – Christies
